A Classic Rock Ambleside Park Weekend – ‘RecAP’ 2018
Vancouver’s biggest classic rock festival, Rock Ambleside Park 2018 (RAP) took place at West Vancouver’s scenic Ambleside Park from August 17-19, 2018. The event was a massive hit as thousands of people thronged to the festival over a period of three days of iconic rock music. Some of the greatest Canadian and international rock bands took the stage and got the crowd jamming and dancing to their biggest hits.
After a successful event last year, this was RAP’s second year in succession which proved to be an even better spectacle.
With a vision to build a strong and happy community of people who recognize and enjoy some of the finest Canadian and International classic rock music, Rock Ambleside Park roped in the likes of popular Canadian rock bands such as Kim Mitchell, Loverboy, Trooper, Rik Emmett, Doug & the Slugs, Lee Aaron, Chilliwack and Toronto. Scottish heavy metal band Nazareth; Little River Band from Australia and British glam rock band Sweet also enthralled the sold-out weekend crowd at RAP.
The ‘Exquisite’ Venue
The gorgeous outdoor venue at Ambleside Park was lit for the occasion with impeccable views from all around the festival ground. With a backdrop of the beautiful mountains; direct beach access from the festival ground; view of the Lion’s Gate bridge; and a lush green field with games, merchandise, food and drink vendors added much more to the festival experience apart from the tremendous music it had to offer.
DAY 1 – Rock Ambleside Park 2018
Big lineup outside the venue was seen hours before the scheduled entrance time as they waited with their lawn chairs on a bright sunny day to occupy the best spots to catch the action from.
Metal queen Lee Aaron kicked off RAP 2018 with her high voltage performance and got people grooving to her tunes. Followed suit was Sweet who dazzled the audience with high energy performance. Lead singer Paulie Z even got down the stage and ran through the crowd while singing! Everybody was on their feet dancing when they played their famous track ‘Ballroom Blitz’ before signing off in style – “we are ‘Sweet’ and so are you!”.
Canadian favourite ‘Loverboy’ was up next and they surely lived up to their fan following. This ‘Notorious’ Canadian band based in Vancouver were a delight to listen to as they continued playing well past their scheduled time. But hey, no one was complaining!
Day 2 – Rock Ambleside Park 2018
Day 2 was the most sought-after day, and it was indeed packed to full potential with a lot of excitement and buzz. None of the four bands playing were any lesser than each other. Rik Emmett of Triumph started off the stellar Saturday by getting the fans involved right from the beginning. A fine display of guitar play from along with his charismatic personality wowed the audience. Chilliwack with their trademark numbers from the past instilled a feeling of throwback and nostalgia.
Canadian singer and guitarist Kim Mitchell entertained fans with his greatest hits such as Rock N’ Roll Duty and Patio Lanterns. The stage blew off the roof when Trooper arrived and ‘Raised A Little Hell’! A high-octane performance by Trooper made people go crazy as they screamed and danced to glory.
A separate VIP section much closer to the stage allowed the guests a chance to meet the artists. Private entrance, complimentary parking pass, free merchandise, unlimited lounge access, couch, laybags, pre-show appetizers, and a private beverage service were all a part of the VIP experience package at RAP.
White Table Dinner
Introduced this year, was another great initiative. A full course ‘White Table Dinner’. An elegant outdoor table set up on the festival ground with catered food and wine provided a unique dining experience. The dinner was also a chance to meet and socialize with fellow festival goers while enjoying great classic rock music.
Day 3 – Rock Ambleside Park 2018
Day 3 started with Doug and the Slugs. Apart from their melodious performance, they interacted with public, signed autographs, shook hands and posed for pictures with them. Next up was ‘Toronto’ who rocked it on stage. Original member and vocalist Anne “Holly” Woods had a huge fan following as they cheered and sang along. Australian band Little River Band with thumping beats and superb music sounded like the rock stars that they are. They revealed to the delight of the public that their largest audience is in Vancouver! Nazareth had the Scottish and Canadian flag on stage as they performed which was a pleasant sight. They closed the festival with some high energy, head-banging, heavy metal performance and left everyone gasping for more!
